Understanding the Concept of Subshells in Atomic Models Subshells are divisions within an atomic shell where electrons with the same energy are grouped. In an atom, each shell consists of one or more subshells, which are denoted by the letters s, p, d, and f. These subshells represent different types of orbitals that electrons can occupy. The s subshell contains one orbital, the p subshell contains three orbitals, the d subshell contains five orbitals, and the f subshell contains seven orbitals. Each orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons with opposite spins. The number of subshells in a shell increases with the shell number. For example, the second shell has s and p subshells, while the third shell has s, p, and d subshells. These concepts are important for understanding electron configuration and chemical bonding, and are included in the NEET Chemistry syllabus to help students grasp atomic structure for NEET exams.
